In this highly technological age where everything seems to turn digital, more people are spending half of their lives engrossed on their computers day after day. Some are busy with work, data, social networking, surfing, and even games. Man has grown so dependent on computers that he hardly realizes its strain on one of the most important parts of the body or to one’s operational existence – the eyes.

How Computer Eye Strain is Related?


Eye strains which are caused from computers would in a sense prove that the eye strain that one experiences is directly or indirectly caused by pre-longed use of personal computers. Depending on ones physiology and the environment surrounding them the symptoms may vary and so may the duration for the symptoms to be evident.

The more computers are governing our lives the more we are finding it difficult to keep our self away from its adverse effects. One of the main concerns of excessive use of computers is problem of an eye strain. Eye strain is the condition of human eye in which we suffer because of over use of computer and its related products which can be in any form like personal computers, computer games and last but not the least watching movies from your PC. Mostly people for whom main task is to sit in front of computers for a whole day, in order to get their task done may suffer this problem. The best preventive measures must be taken more seriously especially by those people who have no choice to change the nature of their jobs about using computers. Anything excessive is bad, and though eye strain may be less complicated and less serious when you take the proper measures to reduce stressing the eyes; nevertheless, complications arise and serious eye problems occur when we become excessively abusive and irresponsible in taking care of our eyes.

Eye strain from computers are associated with symptoms which will definitely affect your work and visual tasks, making you less effective and productive. Simple tips would advise that:

  • Ensure that your monitor is at the correct height angle to prevent you from straining your eyes and neck to see the entire screen.
  • Position your eyes to focus on the centre of the screen.
  • Make sure your lighting is just right without disrupting your vision while looking at the computer.
  • Avoid sitting in front of or behind a window in order to avoid any glare which may reflect from the screen.
  • Take short, frequent breaks away from the monitor. Rest your eyes around 2-3 minutes every 15-20 minutes, 5 minutes every 30 minutes, or 10 minutes every hour.
  • Do eye exercises. A good eye massage daily will help counter eye strain. Massage your eyelids and muscles over your brow, temple and upper cheek. Do it once or twice everyday.
  • Fix your work station as convenient as possible for you, especially the set-up of your computer.
  • Make sure proper lighting is achieved that will control glare and screen reflections.
  • Use proper posture. Proper seating will help you avoid straining from the computer and at the same time, will properly support your back.
  • Blink often because it helps produce tears that moisten and lubricates the eyes.
  • Adjust the brightness setting of your screen.
  • Adjust the font size, colours and screen brightness to your comfort.
  • Watch your diet. Eat lots of food rich in Vitamin A such as carrots, green leafy vegetables coloured fruits. These will help you improve your vision and to prevent related eye problems.
  • Consult an Eye Care Professional when you are suffering a prolonged, consistent symptoms of eye strain due to excessive use of computers.

Sometimes many people tend to ignore this problem in the beginning and they consider it to be a normal headache as a result of pre-longed stirring into a computer screen(s), they fail to realize it's not a temporary situation but can be an on-going build up of an eye strain. But with time the problems of an eye strain. But with time the problems of an eye strain from computers get severe to the extent that it can severely hamper the visibility. If careful precautions are not taken at early stages it can turn out to be a serious concern to any one.
